Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has called on Greece to refrain from actions that could escalate tensions in the region, expressing concerns over Greece’s burgeoning defense relationship with Israel. Fidan emphasized Türkiye’s desire for amicable relations with its neighbor but underscored the expectation that Greece consider Türkiye’s security concerns, particularly regarding military deployments on Aegean islands.
The Aegean islands are a point of contention, as Türkiye views certain deployments there as violations of demilitarization agreements. While both Greece and Türkiye have been working towards better bilateral relations, longstanding issues such as maritime boundaries, territorial waters, and the military status of these islands remain unresolved. Greece, on its part, asserts that its defense measures are necessary to safeguard its sovereignty.
Fidan also criticized Israel’s military actions in Syria, suggesting they pose a threat to regional stability. He reiterated Türkiye’s support for Syria’s quest to restore security, governance, and economic progress, advocating for diplomatic solutions to regional conflicts.
In addition to addressing Greek-Israeli defense ties, Fidan highlighted ongoing regional security cooperation between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan. These nations, he noted, are working on strengthening their security partnership and exploring avenues for expanded collaboration. Türkiye aims to maintain its role in fostering regional cooperation on security matters, including developments in Yemen and potential threats to Saudi Arabia, with a focus on diplomatic engagement and stability.
