Meta has temporarily halted a program designed to gather employee activity data for training its artificial intelligence models due to privacy concerns and backlash from its workforce. This internal tool was initially used to monitor various employee actions, including keyboard and mouse activity as well as the content displayed on computer screens.
The initiative, called the Model Capability Initiative, sparked criticism among employees who raised issues regarding privacy, consent, and trust related to the collection of workplace activity data. Over 1,600 employees signed a petition urging Meta to cease gathering data on their computer usage, reflecting widespread discontent within the company.
Meta defended the program by asserting that it was developed with measures to protect privacy in place and stated that there was no evidence of any improper access to the collected information. Nevertheless, the company decided to pause the project to thoroughly review the system and assess its data practices.
This decision comes at a time when Meta is heavily investing in the development of artificial intelligence, utilizing substantial computing power and resources to enhance its AI models.
