Türkiye Launches Oil Exploration Effort in Western Black Sea Waters

by admin477351

Türkiye is gearing up to initiate drilling operations for oil in the western Black Sea, marking a significant step in its ongoing efforts to boost domestic oil and natural gas reserves. According to Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, the forthcoming drilling endeavor will present substantial technical challenges and is expected to be a time-intensive process. As part of its long-term strategy, Türkiye plans to execute six exploratory drilling wells across the western, central, and eastern Black Sea regions by 2026.

In recent years, Türkiye has notably enhanced its offshore exploration capabilities, now operating a fleet of six deep-water drilling vessels. Several of these vessels are currently engaged in exploration and development activities within the Black Sea. This advancement in offshore drilling infrastructure underscores Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening its energy sector and reducing reliance on energy imports.

Moreover, Türkiye aims to significantly boost its gas production from Black Sea reserves by the end of the year. With current daily production at approximately 9.5 million cubic meters—adequately meeting the natural gas needs of roughly 4 million households—the nation’s Black Sea gas reserves now stand at an estimated 785 billion cubic meters, following several discoveries since 2020. The government anticipates that by 2028, annual production could reach between 16 and 17 billion cubic meters.

This expansion is integral to Türkiye’s overarching strategy to lessen dependence on imported energy and fortify domestic production capabilities. In addition to bolstering its drilling operations, Türkiye is enhancing its liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure and pipeline networks, aiming to solidify its status as a regional energy transit hub. The country is actively exploring new routes that could facilitate the transport of gas from the Middle East to European markets, further enhancing its strategic energy position.
