Spotify is stepping up its efforts to tackle the rise of AI-generated music by implementing new measures to identify and manage such content on its platform. Starting in September, the streaming giant will introduce an “AI persona” label on profiles and track listings of AI-created artists. This initiative aims to help listeners differentiate between human artists and artificial ones, while also ensuring that authentic performers maintain their visibility.
The company has decided that AI personas will not be included in personalized recommendations by default, a step that underscores Spotify’s commitment to protecting real musicians from being overshadowed by AI-generated material. Artists will have the option to declare if their identities are AI-generated, but Spotify will also employ human reviewers and AI tools to detect any undisclosed AI personas.
This strategy comes in response to the rapid increase in AI-generated music, which Spotify has been grappling with. In a previous statement, the company revealed that it had removed 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period, pointing to the influx of artificial and low-quality content flooding music platforms.
As generative AI becomes more prevalent in the music industry, Spotify emphasizes the importance of transparency. The platform recognizes that listeners are increasingly keen to know whether the artist behind a song is a real person or an AI-generated construct. By introducing these measures, Spotify aims to uphold the integrity of its platform and support genuine artists in the ever-evolving digital music landscape.
